I switch on the kettle and make everyone a cup of tea, then take my place at the table opposite the police.

‘According to the Quinns, Linette Smith was a very helpful neighbour, unlike everyone else on The Close,’ DC Cardon says.

‘That’s not fair. I offered to help Mr Quinn look after his wife when he was out, but he declined the offer. Did he mention how annoyed he was about the smoke that enveloped his house when Linette burned wet leaves?’ I decide not to mention his reaction to Linette’s party and the guests who made out in his shed.

‘Yes, he did tell us that,’ DC Dopler says. ‘It seems that Linette ruffled a few feathers during the short time that she was living here. Is there anything else that you would like to tell us?’

Mike and I glance at each other and shake our heads.

‘It would be helpful if you could both stay at home today. Unfortunately, the media have already caught wind of events, and the first journalists have turned up. We’ve put a police cordon at the bottom of the road where The Close joins the lane, so hopefully, you won’t be disturbed. If you have any questions or need to leave your house today, please let one of us know.’

‘How long are you going to be here?’ I ask. ‘It’s just that our children are staying with my mother.’ I’m missing them horribly and have an overwhelming need to hug them and make sure they’re safe.

‘We’re not sure at the moment, but certainly, our forensic team will need at least another twenty-four hours. There will likely be continued police presence thereafter.’

‘I’ll ring the office and work from home today,’ Mike says.
